‘Pep departure intentional negligence’

Former Barcelona President Joan Laporta has criticised current President Sandro Rosell for intentionally allowing Pep Guardiola to leave.

The Coach departed the club at the end of last season after four years on the bench in order to take a sabbatical from the game.

However, for Laporta, who has more than once been critical of Rosell, Guardiola could have stayed on at the Camp Nou, had the club’s board made more of an effort.

“The current board could have done more for him to stay. His departure was their intentional negligence,” Laporta told reporters this week.

Laporta, who served as President between 2003 and 2010, originally worked with Rosell as his Vice-President, before Rosell’s resignation in 2005 in disagreement over the club’s direction.

The two have not been fond of each other since and Laporta took another opportunity to dig at Rosell in discussing the club’s recent sponsorship deal signed with Qatar Airways.

“To have gotten to that point, many lies have been told along the way. Whether or not it was the best deal depends on if the club needed the money.

“But the reality is that Barcelona as a club, with decisions like these, are losing the value of their solidarity.”
