Caparros won’t resign

Joaquin Caparros has made clear that he will not walk away from Mallorca, despite a 5-0 thrashing by Sevilla worsening the club’s crisis.

The islanders are without a win in all competitions for almost three months and last night fell to a resounding 5-0 defeat at home to Sevilla in the first leg of their Last 16 Copa del Rey tie.

“I take all responsibility for the plight of the team,” stated Caparros after the mauling.

“But, we have not hit the bottom, I believe in the players and I feel that they support me.

“We’re all in a mess but we will raise ourselves for the game on Saturday against Athletic and go forward as we can.

“Will I resign? No, if I fall down seven times then I will get up an eighth time, and if I fall eight times then I will get up for a ninth time, I won’t stop.”

The team have conceded nine times in the last two games alone and 30 times in the last 13 played in League and Cup.

“It is everything combined. We created three chances against Sevilla and did not score, they then created and punished us.

“That’s the difference that unbalances the game. The team will improve, there is no choice, because if the opponent sees blood then they will punish you where it hurts and we cannot allow that.

“On Saturday against Athletic we have to win because we are in need of a victory.

“Of course I feel supported by the players. They are very healthy and want to get out of this situation, as much as I wish to, I have no doubt.”
