Messi back for next game?

Barcelona have confirmed that tests carried out on Lionel Messi indicate that his injury may not even keep him out of the team’s next game this weekend.

The Argentine caused concern at Camp Nou on Wednesday night when through on goal as a late substitute he was caught by the advancing Benfica goalkeeper Artur and eventually forced down, holding his knee.

Stretchered off, the fear was that the 25-year-old, who is chasing Gerd Muller’s 85-goal record in a calendar year, was facing a lengthy lay-off.

However, following on from initial reports via their Twitter feed, Barcelona have confirmed via their website that tests indicate a bruised knee.

The club also confirm that its medical services indicate that the player will likely be recovered in time for the team’s next match, Sunday evening’s trip to Real Betis.

Even so, it will be without much training, with the club also confirming that Messi will work in the gym today and tomorrow as a precaution and only return to field work on Saturday.

After that session, the player, Coach Tito Vilanova and the club’s chief medic will assess the injury and determine if he plays the next day.

Barca also make a note of pointing out that the last injury the player picked up playing in a game came over two years ago, in September 2010’s trip to Atletico Madrid, when a Tomas Ujfalusi challenge strained his right ankle.
