Oltra asks for Depor trust

Jose Luis Oltra has asked for patience from Deportivo’s fans and also hit out at reporters for contradictory criticism of his substitutions.

Depor fell to a 3-2 defeat at home to Real Betis on Sunday evening to further extend a miserable start to the season that has embroiled them in the relegation battle.

“I appeal to the unity and strength of the group, and the fans who have been splendid. Together, I am sure and confident that we will move forward,” reassured the Coach after Sunday’s reverse.

Oltra was taken to task for his substitution when the game was at 2-2, which saw him remove centre-back Roderick in favour of forward Rodolfo Bodipo. The move was soon followed by Joel Campbell’s winning goal at the other end for Betis.

“I made the changes to win. We had control of the game, we were playing a lot of balls into the box, so I brought on the striker that we had on the bench.

“They had left Ruben Castro alone, they had removed Jorge Molina and I spoke to Alex Bergantinos for him to act between midfield and defence. I did what I did to win.

“The team go for the win at all time, which is why they are looking good. But, assessments have to be made on the results.

“In Vigo you crucified my for doing the opposite [making a defensive substitution] because we did not win and today [Sunday], because we did not win or draw, the point being argued is now this.”

Depor sit 19th in the League table, with only two wins to their name all season.

“I ask the fans to trust the team, we know we are accountable and we are aware of the situation. We will leave our soul on the pitch, so that the results will come.

“The team has few points for the football played, whilst this game is determined on points, not for football played, and it is costing us.

“From here, we must trust the group to get us out of this as soon as possible.”
