Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso has praised opponents Atletico Madrid after their 2-0 defeat of Diego Simeone's side last night.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil gave Los Blancos a 2-0 home win over their city-rivals, but the Spain international has admitted that the game was 'very competitive'.
“We wanted to win after our loss last weekend,” he told AS. “We had to make sure that we bounced back.
“The whole game was very competitive, but we controlled it very well and we didn't have too many problems.
“We knew it would be competitive because they came with a good dynamic.”
He also commented on the 11 point gap between his team and Barcelona at the top of the table.
“There are many point to play for,” he said. “We should focus on adding in three, not trying to cut the difference as soon as possible.”
