Pochettino: I won’t run away

Espanyol boss Mauricio Pochettino has insisted he’s going nowhere after Getafe inflicted another painful defeat on Los Periquitos.

The Barcelona based club blew the chance to climb out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 defeat at home to Getafe in today’s lunchtime kick-off. Pochettino’s side had more shots on goal and more than 60 per cent possession but were picked off by goals scored by Pedro Leon and Mane.

“I don’t have the cowardice to run away,” the beleaguered Argentine told reporters at the Estadio Cornella-El Prat. “But looking at our position in the table the fans cries against me are justified.”

Espanyol are bottom of La Liga with just nine points, having won only two of their 13 fixtures to date. New President Joan Collet, who was elected in contentious circumstances earlier this week, paid a visit to the dressing room post-match, something Pochettino sought to play down the significance of.

“It was a talk as usual. But now the nerves are close to the surface.

“We need stability and unity. In the first half we were very nervous and tense. In the second half we enclosed Getafe and were unfortunate not to score.”
