Athletic’s Europa game suspended

Athletic Bilbao’s Europa League match originally scheduled for this Thursday away to Hapoel Kyriat has been suspended due to security fears.

Athletic had been talking to UEFA this week in an attempt to have the group stage match moved to outside of Israel, amid concerns over safety in the country during their conflict with Palestine.

UEFA initially refused this request, but upon an attack on a bus in Tel Aviv this morning, where Thursday’s game was due to be played, have agreed to Athletic’s latest request to suspend the match.

The team spent several hours waiting at the airport as talks continued, with their original flight delayed more than once and then eventually cancelled.

Athletic were informed by UEFA of the decision at 12pm UK time, whilst the game does not have a new date confirmed as of yet.
