Athletic will go to Israel

Despite ongoing conflict in the country, Athletic Bilbao have been unsuccessful in attempts to have UEFA rearrange their Europa League fixture from Israel.

With Israeli and Palestine forces clashing violently in Gaza, the Basque club had spoken to the European game’s governing body to have their Thursday evening fixture away to Hapoel Kyriat rearranged to a location outside of Israel.

However, those talks have been unsuccessful and the club will now travel out to the country to play their game just 100km away from the main conflict.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will arrive in the country at six in the evening today and go straight to the stadium for their Press conference, before then not leaving their hotel for the next 24 hours until playing the game.

The team, who will then fly out the same night as the match, will have a strong police presence escorting them from location to location.
