Real talking with Alonso

Xabi Alonso is reported to be in contract talks with Real Madrid over adding a further two years to his current deal.

The midfielder, who has developed a role under Jose Mourinho that the Portuguese is struggling to replace when he is absent, currently has a contract that runs until June 2014.

However, the 30-year-old is understood by AS to already been in advanced negotiations with the club over an extension to June 2016.

Alonso, who has been at the Santiago Bernabeu since summer 2009, would also be set for a pay rise from €3.5m per year to €4.5m.

Statistically, only Iker Casillas, Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos have played more minutes this season than the former Liverpool man.

The club are also reported today as reaching the final stages of renewing Gonzalo Higuain’s contract.
