Valencia batter BATE

Valencia took a big step towards the Champions League last 16 with an action packed 4-2 win over BATE Borisov at Mestalla.

BATE looked sharp early on but Jonas turned in the game in Valencia's favour with two moments of inspiration in quick succession.

The Brazilian – who was fined and dropped for indiscipline recently – gathered a Tino Costa cross and fired into the top corner, then played in Andres Guardado three minutes player. The Mexican was brought down, a penalty was awarded, and Roberto Soldado did the honours to notch a remarkable 16th goal in his last 20 Champions League matches.

Sofiane Feghouli scored from a Fernando Gago assist to seemingly wrap things up early in the second half but the Belarussians replied just a minute later through Renan Bressan.

And the visitors made things very tense when they pulled another goal back in the 83rd minute, substitute Dmitri Mozolevski tapping in after Vitali Rodionov caught out Gago.

However Feghouli got his second and the killer goal with four minutes to play, controlling an Ever Banega cross and finishing emphatically.
