Espanyol surprise La Real

Espanyol shocked Real Sociedad to come away from Anoeta with all three points in Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off.

A goalless first half saw both sides encouraged to probe at each other and respond with some neat football, but little goalmouth action ensue.

The home side, who had the better of the play in the opening 45, continued to take possession into the second half, but struggled to find a way through in a rain-soaked encounter at Anoeta.

Inevitably they were made to pay when Espanyol capitalised on some hesitant defending from a corner to take the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Joan Verdu’s corner from the left wasn’t cleared and fell to Hector Moreno, whose hooked effort across the goal was turned in by his fellow centre-back Diego Colotto.

La Real looked to react but didn’t come up with anything in the final third to slump to a second consecutive home defeat. Espanyol at least temporarily move out of the relegation zone with this result.
