Real Betis are thinking of making an attempt to lure Esteban Granero back to Spain if they fail to keep midfielder Benat in January.

Spanish international Benat has been consistently linked with a move away from the Benito Villamarin since the summer, but the €20m rescission clause in his contract has put off a number of potential suitors, particularly Athletic Bilbao.

However, according to Marca, the player’s representatives are trying to get that figure reduced and also provide Benat with a substantial wage increase, although the Andalusians could not come close to what Wolfsburg offered the 25-year-old before the start of this season.

Even so, Betis are also considering their options and have not ruled out a possible sale in the next transfer window, with boss Pepe Mel understood to have earmarked Granero as a replacement.

The Real Madrid man is currently on loan at Queens Park Rangers, who paid Real Madrid €6m to secure his services, but his salary could prove a major obstacle for Los Beticos, who have struggled economically for the past few seasons.

Nonetheless, Betis are believed to be keen on an agreement that would see them pay half the player’s yearly salary of €3m for a six-month loan spell.
