Atleti hold out for narrow win

Second half goals from Diego Costa and Emre gave Atletico Madrid a 2-1 win over Academica in the Europa League.

As Diego Simeone's side looked to maintain their 100 per cent record in this season's Europa League, it came as no great shock to see them dominate possession in the opening exchanges.

Koke, Gabi and Tiago we all keeping the ball well, but against a well-organised Briosa side, they failed to create any clear-cut chances.

Diego Costa had a speculative shot blocked and Koke forced Ricardo into a save, but both teams went into the break level.

After the interval though, the home team soon made amends as Koke's corner was flicked on by Tiago for Diego Costa to acrobatically volley in.

And it was soon two, as on 67 minutes, Emre curled in a delightful free kick that gave Ricardo no chance.

Wilson Eduardo forced Sergio Asenjo into a good save late on, but they didn't give up on a consolation, and got it with five minutes remaining as Salim Cisse headed home a Marinho free kick.

The fightback never came however, and Atletico Madrid claimed the three points to remain unbeaten.
