Montanier blames ref for Atleti win

Real Sociedad boss Philippe Montanier blamed referee Ayza Gamez for his side’s last-gasp 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Montanier said although he was pleased with his team’s performance it was the official who was responsible for swinging the match the way of Diego Simeone’s men.

Gamez showed a yellow card to five Sociedad players against two from Atleti and failed to signal what looked a clear penalty to the Txuri-urdin towards the end of the first half.

“Atletico Madrid are one of the best teams in Europe and do not need any extra help,” Montanier told a Press conference.

“I’m satisfied with my team’s display because we played well against a great side. It’s not my custom to talk about referees but he was decisive. The whole ground was angry and we deserved much more.

“There was a clear penalty for us at the end of the first half that could have been a red card. He gave less fouls against us but, funnily enough, booked more of our players.

“Still, if we maintain this intensity and quality of play we’ll win a lot more matches, although it was a shame for the players as they put in a lot of effort for no reward.”

Montanier was asked if he thought the bigger teams such as Atletico Madrid benefit more from referees’ decisions.

“I hope there is no difference because this is the seventh defeat we’ve suffered with this referee, and I hope that’s just a coincidence,” he concluded.
