Falcao scores last minute Atleti winner

Radamel Falcao scored a last minute free kick to give Atletico Madrid a 1-0 win against Real Sociedad at Estadio Anoeta.

With Barcelona winning on Saturday night, Diego Simeone's side were out to claim all three points and get within goal difference of the Blaugrana at the top of the table.

The away team started the game brightly, with Falcao proving his usual threatening self. But it was Philippe Montanier's men who went closest to opening the scoring early on. Carlos Vela, from the edge of the area, struck a low shot, only to see his effort tipped around the post by Thibaut Courtois.

The home side really started to turn the screw from then on, and frustrated the Rojiblancos with their rigid defence and high-tempo pressing game.

Chances were at a premium for the visitors, but they almost went into the break a goal up, only for Raul Garcia to put his close-range header wide.

After the interval, Simeone's men were beginning to put into practise their fast-flowing possession game.

And it almost paid dividends, but Falcao could only shoot wide after a Koke shot had rebounded back to the Colombian.

Sociedad continued to stifle their opponents, and almost hit them for the ultimate sucker-punch late on. A counter-attacking run and pass from Antoine Griezmann found Vela, but his one-on-one effort flew over the bar.

In injury time though, a Falcao free kick from the edge of the area, curled over the wall and into the back of the net, to give Atleti the three points.
