Cristiano gets flak in Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo came under fire in his native Portugal this week following the 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw with Northern Ireland.

The Real Madrid star was winning his 100th cap for his country but a number of papers focussed on his poor performance in the game, with comments such as ‘Portugal played without him’ and ‘shameful spectacle’ just some of the things written.

Record maintained that the former Manchester United man ‘had nothing to smile about on the day of his centenary’ while A Bola claimed ‘everything went wrong and Portugal are still playing without him [Ronaldo]’, adding that ‘the biggest star failed to turn up on his 100th appearance for Portugal’.

Diario de Noticias was even more scathing as it declared that ‘there are no reasons to celebrate Ronaldo’s centenary as he and Portugal put on a shameful spectacle’, concluding with the verdict that ‘Ronaldo was the face of a poor show’.
