Real have ‘winning gene’, says Hierro

Former Real Madrid defender Fernando Hierro is confident the club can overcome Barcelona's eight point early season advantage.

Having won only two of their opening five fixtures the Merengues already have a sizeable gap to bridge if they're to catch title rivals Barca, who have a 100 per cent record.

“They are a team used to winning, and Jose Mourinho is a Coach used to winning” Hierro told EFE.

“Undoubtedly with only five games played an eight point gap will be hard to cut, but if anything is sure it is that Real Madrid have a winning gene.”

The former Malaga director was speaking at a conference of European national teams hosted by the Polish FA, where Spain Coach Vicente Del Bosque was also in attendance.

Real hope to begin cutting that eight point gap when they host Deportivo La Coruna this weekend, with Barca facing a much harder challenge away to Sevilla.
