Barca planning Xavi renewal

Barcelona are continuing with the policy of renewing their star players’ contracts and next on the agenda is Xavi Hernandez.

After a week in which President Sandro Rosell said the club was working on Lionel Messi’s renewal, midfielder Xavi’s agent Ivan Corretja confirmed to Esport 3 that his client, whose contract ends in 2014, is set to be offered an extension.

“The club has communicated to us its intention to open negotiations for the renewal and improvement of Xavi’s contract, for which we are very grateful, and we hope that things will develop from here,” revealed Corretja, who said he was confident of reaching agreement.

“It [a new contract] has always been there and I’m sure that will be the case this time.”

Xavi is the latest in a number of important players and promising youngsters who Barca will be looking to tie up on long-term deals.

Next June sees the contracts of Carles Puyol, Eric Abidal and Cristian Tello run out, while the following year sees agreements with David Villa, Victor Valdes, the aforementioned Xavi, Martin Montoya and Marc Bartra, among others, all expire.
