Betis put pressure on Espanyol

An unconvincing Real Betis scrapped past an Espanyol side now in serious trouble, thanks to a first half goal from Paulao.

The hosts took the lead after 20 minutes when Spanish midfielder Benat delivered a superb cross to defender Paulao, who executed a pinpoint header off the post that surprised Cristian Alvarez.

The Brazilian goal scorer was forced to off after half an hour as a tackle by former Villarreal winger Wakaso Mubarak injured his ankle, and was in visible pain as he left the field.

Five minutes later Espanyol striker Cristian Gomez also needed treatment following a heavy challenge from Sergio Tejera, but continued on.

Wakaso was shown a second yellow card early after the interval for a tackle on Juan Carlos, and the dynamic midfielder’s pace was sorely missed.

Betis held on to secure all three points and climb further up the table, even if they were unconvincing throughout.

Espanyol are in serious trouble having only picked up one point all season, and remain joint bottom with Osasuna.
