Rosell working on Messi’s renewal

Barcelona President Sandro Rosell told Catalunya Radio on Thursday that the club must work on renewing Lionel Messi’s contract.

The Argentine’s current deal expires in June 2016 and Rosell believes it would be remiss of the Catalan giants to not address the subject of his renewal as soon as possible.

“Messi’s contract ends in 2016 and it would be irresponsible of us not to improve it as you have to think about what will happen,” said Rosell.

“Right now there is nothing programmed but this is a machine that never stops working and things can change at any time.

“The coaching staff are thinking about next Sunday but we are looking further forward and long-term.

“We must start working now on the details of Messi’s contract from 2016 onwards.”

Rosell was also asked his comments on the recent so-called crisis at Real Madrid following declarations made by Cristiano Ronaldo.

“The day we start to worry about others, the things that other clubs do, is the day we will start losing. We must all be united and work together,” he replied.

In relation to Tito Vilanova, Rosell believes he is now more focused as a Coach in his own right than when he was Pep Guardiola’s No 2.

“He is more concentrated on being a Coach. Pep was also like that but he transcended everything.

I meet with Tito every month or 40 days to try and improve things, like I did with Guardiola,” said Rosell.
