Betis always compete says Mel

Real Betis boss Pepe Mel says his teams always go out to win despite declarations from goalkeeper Fabricio this week.

The player had suggested Betis took it easy in a game with Sporting Gijon at the end of last season, but Mel has moved quickly to refute any suggestions his men do not compete against any opponent.

“I don’t wish to go over something that makes no sense, not now or at any other time because I am above that,” declared Mel after his team’s final training session before the game against Real Valladolid on Monday night.

“The lad said something and he has given an explanation so that’s the end of it.

“It’s untrue to say that Betis don’t go out to compete in every game because winning every one of them is a challenge.”

Questioned on whether he had spoken to the player, Mel refused to divulge any details on the matter.

“It’s an internal thing and we want Fabricio to be allied to our cause because he will be valuable for us this season,” he explained.

Betis have been without a competitive game for over three weeks and Mel hopes it will not have an adverse effect on his side for the game at the Nuevo Jose Zorrilla.

“It’s a long time to have been without a game and it won’t do us any favours. It will be 23 days without an official match and the players are well aware of that.”
