Puyol facing lengthy lay-off?

Barcelona have been dealt a blow with reports surfacing that defender Carles Puyol suffered knee ligament damage against Getafe this weekend.

The defender, who was making his return to the starting XI after fracturing his cheekbone against Osasuna in Week 2, was forced off 12 minutes into the second half of his team’s 4-1 win at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Saturday.

Puyol appeared to get the studs on his left boot caught in the turf when falling backwards, after going in for a challenge against Abdel Barrada.

Sitting on the bench for the remainder of the contest with his knee then heavily strapped and iced on the bench, subsequent reports have emerged post-match that the veteran has damaged the ligaments in his left knee.

Specifically, it is alleged that the player has stretched the cruciate ligament in his joint, which would rule him out for four to six weeks.

The player will undergo tests in the coming hours to determine the exact extent of any damage done.

Puyol was forced to miss the summer's European Championship campaign in Poland and Ukraine after undergoing knee surgery, but that was for his other knee.
