461st Liga appearance for Casillas

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is set to make a significant 461st appearance in La Liga when Real Madrid face Sevilla tonight.

Casillas, 31, will equal Carlos Santillana, the great Madrid striker of the 1970s and 1980s, in terms of League appearances for the club, and will have only Manolo Sanchis and Raul Gonzalez in front of him in the club's all-time list.

The ‘keeper known affectionately as San Iker is in his 14th season at the Santiago Bernabeu, and is on course to top the list well before he retires.

Sanchis made 523 League appearances in 18 seasons for Madrid, while Raul tops the list after playing 550 games in 17 campaigns before joining Schalke 04 in 2010.

Casillas, who made his debut against Athletic Bilbao at San Mames in September 1999, said recently: “I have a contract here until I am 36 and my dream is to keep playing until I reach 39.”

The all-time Liga appearance record is held by the former Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Spain goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta. The current Barca sporting director played in 622 League matches in a career that spanned two decades.
