Gago to return late after scare

Valencia midfielder Fernando Gago will fly back to Spain later tonight as Argentine Football Association officials keep him under observation.

The midfielder was stretchered off just before the hour mark of Argentina’s 1-1 draw with Peru last night wearing a neck brace having suffered a blow to the head.

Initial tests revealed that there was no serious injury, but protocol saw the player kept in hospital overnight.

AFA doctors have confirmed with his club Valencia that he needs to be kept under observation for 24 hours after the injury, meaning that his return to Spain is being delayed.

His availability for the weekend visit of Celta Vigo is not yet confirmed, but early reports suggest that he is unlikely to play, more as a precaution than anything else.
