Spurs, QPR battle for Granero

Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers are set to battle it out for Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero.

The 25-year-old looks set to follow Nuri Sahin out of the Santiago Bernabeu following the signing of Luka Modric, with Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, according to Marca, having made it clear the former Getafe man does not figure in his plans.

Granero has not been selected in any of Mourinho’s squads for the opening two La Liga fixtures and it appears his days with Real could be numbered, particularly since his contract with the club expires in June 2013.

With just 72 hours remaining in the transfer market Madrid would like to offload him quickly, although both Premier League outfits fancy taking him on an initial loan arrangement.

However, Spurs could hold the aces after the announcement on Monday of a partnership agreement with Los Blancos, which could facilitate the transfer of players in either direction.

It is not the first time the London club have made enquiries about the Madrid-born player. Former boss Harry Redknapp was understood to have been willing to offer around €14m for El Pirata last summer to replace Modric, who was on the verge of a move to neighbours Chelsea.

Granero’s agent Carlo Cutropia has already held talks with the Madrid hierarchy to discuss his client’s situation at the club, with Real Betis and Malaga also believed to be monitoring his situation.
