Perquis glad to choose Betis

Although Damien Perquis is not officially a better player yet, he insists he is glad to be moving to the Andalusian club.

Defender Perquis’ transfer from Sochaux is expected to be completed within hours and the French-born Polish international, who revealed he also had an offer from Real Zaragoza, says he knows he has made the right choice.

“I preferred Betis and I have no regrets,” he declared in an interview with Gwizek24.

“On Saturday I was at the match against Rayo Vallecano and when I saw the atmosphere inside the stadium I immediately knew I chose well – and I was right.

“You cannot compare Betis to Sochaux as they are two different worlds. Betis has a stadium that can hold 55,000 people and there were almost 40,000 there against Rayo [in reality it was 30,000].

“I can’t wait to make my debut. If all goes well I’ll be able to play against Atletico Madrid next week.”

Perquis, 28, began his professional career with Troyes before making a name for himself at Saint-Etienne and Sochaux and, having been compared at times to Real Madrid defender Pepe, he admits he is an admirer of the Portuguese international.

“I like him because he is one of the best defenders in the world. To be compared to him is not so bad for me,” he conceded.

On La Liga in particular, and the thought of facing the strikers from Barcelona and Real Madrid, he says he has no fear on that score.

“I am not afraid because that wouldn’t be a good characteristic for a defender to have.

“Besides, all teams in Spain have good attackers, including Rayo Vallecano,” he added.
