Zubizarreta: No more after Song

Sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has suggested that Alex Song is Barcelona’s last purchase of the 2012 summer transfer market.

The Cameroonian completed a €19m move to the Catalans from Arsenal yesterday, which as Zubizerreta explained at his unveiling today, was a straightforward affair.

“We decided to sign a midfielder who could play in the middle because of the departure of Keita,” he reflected.

“On our list, we wanted a player with aerial ability, physical strength and tactical awareness and Alexander Song was top of that list.

“The negotiations with Arsenal were quick and efficient and the truth is that I appreciated that.”

The former goalkeeper confirmed that Song would be the final arrival this summer.

“We have the players we wanted. Until the market closes, anything can happen, but I will say that more as a precaution.

“Regarding any more departures, we will have to see if some of the players could continue learning. If so, they can go out. We already have the team we want and the level of additions.”

Cristian Tello and Marc Muniesa have been linked with loan deals out of the club this summer.

“What we want is for the player to play and for every three days to be involved and to get to know his limit.

“That is the ultimate goal, which is to improve a player who has fewer chances of playing. Sometimes the possibility of staying at a club happens to come with some time away from it.

“Convincing someone that they should leave, though, is not feasible if the player himself has no such belief.

“I am optimistic Tello will sign a new deal. Vilanova has him and the hope is that he can be included. Muniesa will train with the first team even whilst he is injured and he will not leave. He’s earned it. He will have to wait until the winter market [for a possible loan].”
