Pepe released from hospital

Real Madrid defender Pepe has been given the all clear and discharged from hospital after a head injury sustained at the weekend.

The Portuguese centre-back clashed heads with Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas in the first half of last night's 1-1 draw with Valencia, and was substituted at half-time.

Described as 'confused and agitated' upon his arrival at hospital, he was kept in overnight.

However La Paz hospital chief medical supervisor Dr Carlos Diez has now confirmed Pepe's discharge, with the outcome of his tests described as ‘positive’ and his condition now said to be ‘very good’.

“Normally, when dealing with a head injury, we keep the player in for intense observation for at least 24 hours,” he explained.

"We also transfer them to the hospital, where they can undergo tests to check for damage. In this case Pepe responded excellently to testing and we decided it would be best to discharge him.”
