Mel admits Benat could leave

Real Betis boss Pepe Mel has admitted at a Press conference on Saturday morning that midfielder Benat Exteberria could leave the club.

Benat has been linked with a €10m move to Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg this week, despite having a buy-out clause of €20m inserted into his contract, and Mel appeared resigned to losing the Spanish international.

“They have informed me that Benat could go,” said Mel.

“Obviously I do not want him to leave but if it is best [for the club] that he goes to Germany then I wish him every success, because he is a player who is going to get even better.

“Of course, to sell him for less than €15m would be a bad deal, as I’ve said before.”

However, the Madrid-born Coach said he would still select the player against Athletic Bilbao in the season’s opener tomorrow if need be.

“Nobody at the club has told me not to pick him. If I need him then he will play.

“All I ask is that if Benat goes then we are prepared for it.”
