Valencia count cost of Europe

Despite reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League, Valencia received a total of €2m less in revenue from UEFA in 2011-12 compared to 2010-11.

Last year saw Unai Emery’s outfit finish third in the group stages of the Champions League, before progressing to the final four in the Europa League until elimination by Atletico Madrid.

Despite this, UEFA have confirmed that the club received €22m in total competition revenue, which is €2m less than they received for the 2010-11 campaign.

In that season, Los Che only reached the Last 16 of the Champions League before elimination to Schalke. The difference lies in the Europa League, which although saw the team play eight games in last year, only earned €3m in total money. Elimination at the group stage of the Champions League in 2011-12, however, earned the team more than €18m.

Next season, money paid out to all 32 teams competing in the Champions League is set at an initial €8.6m fee, with a further €1m due for every win and €500,000 for every draw.

Valencia are again in the group stages of the premier competition, this time under new Coach Mauricio Pellegrino.
