Levante transfer Kone to Wigan

Levante have confirmed via the club’s official website that striker Arouna Kone has been sold to Wigan Athletic for €5m.

“Levante wish to thank the Ivory Coast forward for his professionalism and dedication in defending our shirt and wish him the best of luck in his new career,” read a statement.

Kone spent last season on loan at the Ciutat de Valencia from Sevilla and notched 15 goals in 34 La Liga appearances, prompting Los Granotes to exercise their right to take the 28-year-old on a permanent basis as per their agreement with the Andalusians.

However, he has now been sold to the Premier League side in a similar manner to the way in which Felipe Caicedo joined Lokomotiv Moscow last summer, with the Valencia-based club showing a healthy profit.

Levante boss Juan Ignacio Martinez has already moved to replace Kone with the acquisition of Greek international striker Theofanis Gekas.
