Pinto: I want Valdes’ Barca spot

Barcelona goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto says he is still `ambitious` and will try to take the No 1 jersey off Victor Valdes next season.

The 36-year-old, signed on a free transfer from Celta Vigo in January 2008, has made just 15 La Liga starts since and was limited to playing mainly Copa del Rey games under former boss Pep Guardiola.

However, Pinto is hoping the appointment of Tito Vilanova as Head Coach means everybody in the squad will start from scratch and get a chance to prove themselves.

“Tito will make the decision he feels is best for the team and whatever he decides, whether it is playing in La Liga or the Copa del Rey, I will continue working.

“My aim is to try and secure a place in the starting line-up because I am competitive and ambitious, so I will be trying to take Victor’s place off him,” he told a Press conference.

After the first week back in pre-season training, Pinto says not much has changed with respect to how Vilanova and Guardiola conduct their sessions.

“I think it has been a typical few days as we are still adapting and doing a lot of physical work, with everything running smoothly and everybody appearing eager.

“As for Tito, he is the same as always in his organisation of training and we are continuing to work the same way we have always done.”
