Barca offer Puyol open-ended contract

Barcelona are to offer Carles Puyol an open-ended contract to keep the 34-year-old at the club for the remainder of his career.

Puyol has just returned to training after long-term injury and, according to Sport, the Catalans aim to be flexible in negotiations with their captain despite reports last week that they wanted him to quit international football.

The Spanish international, whose current agreement expires in June 2013,  has already stated his intention is to still be playing into his 40s and director of football Andoni Zubizarreta said recently that Puyol’s case was special.

“Puyol’s circumstances go beyond just a contract,” explained the former Barca goalkeeper.

“When I return from holiday I will sit down and speak with him about how he sees his future and then we will offer him a new deal.”

Zubizarreta is expected to meet the player’s agent Ramon Sostres in the next few days to start talks, although La Blaugrana understand there is no urgency on Puyol’s part as he is keen to remain with the club where he has spent his entire professional career.

Consequently, Barcelona are prepared to tell Puyol he can think over his situation at the end of every season, when there will be a contract on the table if he chooses to sign it.
