Barcelona to miss out on €10m payment following defender’s ACL injury

Last month, Sergino Dest suffered a serious knee injury during training with PSV Eindhoven, whom he is currently on loan at from Barcelona. The USMNT defender has now confirmed that he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, which will see him out of action for the remainder of 2024.

Dest had been having an excellent season at PSV, who can confirm themselves at Dutch champions this week. As such, plans had been put in place to trigger the buy option in the loan agreement with Barcelona, worth €10m. However, Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that the chances of this happening are reduced because of the injury.

Barcelona will be desperate to get rid of Dest this summer, so that funds can be raised for new signings. An agreement with PSV could still come, but it now seems more likely that the buy option won’t be triggered, with negotiations over a lower fee being opened instead.
