Ibai relaxed over Bilbao contract

Ibai Gomez has reflected on discussions over a new contract with Athletic Bilbao and insists he is relaxed about it.

The 24-year-old’s current agreement at San Mames expires next June, but the striker says he has not set a deadline to enter into negotiations regarding a new deal.

“I’m relaxed. The President said last week that when there is something [on the table] then we’ll talk. Meanwhile it’s no good saying anything.

“We’ve not set a date. We are speaking, but the main thing is the sporting aspect and if anything happens we’ll say it clear and to the point,” he told reporters.

Athletic visit Malaga next Monday and sit fifth in La Liga, yet having taken just six points on their travels from a possible 18, Ibai believes it is a record that must be improved upon.

“Away from home we are not getting many points and the performances have not been good. It’s obvious we must improve, although we appreciate the total of 23 points we do have.

“It’s hard to know what the difference is between playing at home or away because the intention is always the same,” he explained.
